Information Security Tips Videos on Roadshow (Feb 6 – 19, 2012) For two weeks in February, Internet Society Hong Kong had shared a set of Information Security Tips videos for the general public in Hong Kong. Through a valuable media using RoadShow , an estimate of 3.6 million bus passengers daily across Hong Kong had a chance to view one of the four informative video produced by Internet Society Hong Kong. Cyberport awards HK$1.5 million to new tech projects(Computer World Hong Kong)Feb 21, 2012Cyberport will award a total of HK$1.5 million to 15 start-up tech projects via its latest round of Cyberport Creative Micro Fund (CCMF), the organization said Monday.Each of the projects will receive HK$100,000, according to Cyberport, adding that the 15 selected projects come from a wide range of categories, including digital entertainment, mobile applications, business tools and social networking services. Read More Apple confirms solar farm at Maiden data center(Datacenter Dynamics) Feb 21, 2012 Apple said it is building the largest end-user solar array and carrying out the largest non-utility fuel cell installation in the US for its data center in Maiden, North Carolina. Apple’s plans to build the solar farm at the site first came to light in October 2011, after it received a permit from local officials to reshape a slope on its 171-acre property in Maiden. At the time there was no confirmation the solar farm would be used for its data center. Read More The Internet Society wants ACTA reconsidered (The Inquirer) Feb 13, 2012 NON-PROFIT GROUP the Internet Society has written to the European Parliament about the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). In its letter addressed to “Honourable Members of the European Parliament” the group says that ministers must use the time between now and official ratification at the end of June to carefully consider the treaty and what it means for the internet. Mark Zuckerberg used the term to describe how his collaborators and employees refined Facebook with thousands of small improvements and turned it from a dorm-room project into a $100-billion corporate giant. Read More EU court: Social networks can’t be forced to monitor users (CNET) Feb 16, 2012 The European Union’s highest court says social networks cannot be forced to monitor users just to stop piracy. The European Court of Justice ruled today that forcing social networks to install monitoring systems just to see if people are illegally downloading copyrighted material creates a “complicated” and “costly” burden on the sites for little or no upside. The court was also concerned about the privacy of user data. Read More New Internet Rules in China (Mayer Brown) Feb 15, 2012 The PRC Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (“MII”) has recently promulgated “Several Provisions on Regulating the Market Order of Internet Information Services” (“Provisions”) to ensure a level playing ground for website operators in China and to enhance protection to Internet users in areas such as Internet security, web advertising and data protection. The Provisions will come into effect on 15 March 2012. Read More FBI says social media monitoring won’t infringe privacy rights (Computer World) Feb 14, 2012 The FBI today said that its proposed plans to monitor social media sites as part of a broader strategy to improve real-time situation awareness will be fully vetted by the agency’s Privacy and Civil Liberties Unit. The unit will review the legal implications of the monitoring application and ensure that it meets all privacy and civil rights obligations before it is implemented, the agency said in a statement emailed to Computerworld “Although the FBI has always adapted to meet changes in technology, the rule of law, civil liberties, and civil rights, will remain our guiding principles,” the agency said.
